Default city temp GOOD / hwy temp BAD

So, I don't understand what is going on. The engine temp in the city is really good 193 solid all the time. WIth AC on it is 197 solid. BUT on the highway it climbs... 215/217. With the AC on FULL it is 221 (semi stable) but that was as high as I was comfortable letting it get. AC off... drops back to 212/215. I am in Ontario CA and it is a warm (30C / 90F) and highway is rolling hills.

WHAT is going on? Checked fan clutch, doesn't do more than 1.5 rotations by hand. Cleaned the Radiator fins... no noticeable difference. ?? I don't know what to do next or how to check other things. Engine is newly rebuilt (should not be an issue).

Looking for any advice / help.

Cheers!!

Sounds like proper temps for a stock thermostat... If that is what you think you have... There have been several cases of mislabeled 180 degree stats on the market. Also proper bleeding is key. Take a look inside the bleed screw hole when the engine is cold (first thing in the morning) and make sure there is no air right there... Coolant should be right up to the screw. If not top off right through that hole, then check again the next morning.

I can also say my system runs hotter on the highway when the air temp is above 85F but rarely over 200.

thank you for the read... great info. I liked the inline thermostat. But will look at getting a new 180 Tstat to see if the changes things.

my temps in town are pretty good I thought. But the 180 might fix all.

cheers

Maybe a blockage in the radiator/system? Making it less efficient at higher RPM's?

If it helps I have been mapping my temps as I had a cooling issue
  • Black 78C thermostat from Bearmach
  • 2 hours temps at 14-16 C
  • Speeds ranging from 50 to 100 Kph (30 to 60) miles an hour
  • non stop mostly with 20 minutes of city traffic at both ends
  • heat off
  • low was 183.5 high was 195.6 averaged 188.6 to 190.4

I am currently running the default factory 192-degree thermostat (instead of the 180-degree thermostat). The reason is the shop which installed my Turner engine insisted on the use of the factory recommended 192-degree thermostat in order to cover warranty on the engine.

My Ultragauge shows temps around 195-degrees to 210-degrees. It rarely goes over 210-degrees with the 192-degree thermostat.

Hope this is useful reference.

Shop doing what they had to do.

One time it took me several weeks to get all the air out. Another time I got it bled the first try. I found air causes temps to rise just as you described, hot on the highway.

That doesn't sound right. I have an 180 deg stat and on a 90deg day I can see 200 while sitting in traffic and watch it drop to 180 when I get on the highway doing 80 mph. I can also see a similar temp drop on the air intake temps. Moving more air through certainly more than compensates for the extra btu's the motor is throwing off.
