CKP - Replace Before Failure
You can buy a spare, but I can almost guarantee it will never fail now. I had one going out - if I ran the truck, parked it 10 mins, came back it would not start. pour water on it - started. Cold started every time. I put a heatshield on it a year ago and have had not problems since.
I really like the idea of heat-shielding the crank sensor, kudos.
Jury is still out on wrapping a starter in insulation, though. The starter motor itself can generate a lot of heat if engaged for any length of time, so insulating that internal heat might work against you.
However, if your Disco always starts up instantly, then it makes sense to insulate the starter from the cat's external heat.
Hence, jury is still out.

You only need the heat shield between the starter and exhaust. Chevy starters (Disco is very similar) used to have issues when long tube headers were installed (back in the day before heat shields). Didn't your Disco have a heat shield on the starter? They come with one from the factory.
