Default Common problem?

Has anyone else experienced the lighting switch on the steering column going bad? shorting out? I see more used wiper switches being sold on ebay than the lighting switches. As they are mounted in the same assembly it makes me think maye the lighting switch goes bad more often than the wiper switch?

It's not that common, many get broken when being hit by a knee. Why, is yours broken?

No but I think it may be shorting out. Originally the rh running lights only worked and the lh ones kept blowing the fuse under the dash. Then the symptoms changed so that now as soon as the lighting switch is turned to the first position the lighting fuse under the hood blows first.

So I did take the switchapart to clean it but apart from remembering why I hated Lucas so much I didn't find anything obvious other than a severe copper colored discoloration across most of the back of the terminals.

The short may not be in the switch. You might try working from the outside in, starting with the wiring to each of the running lights and checking for continuitytoground on any of the positive leads. If you have continuity to ground on more than one light, you know the short is not in the wiring to any individual light, but rather before the wiring harness. Then you can check each wire from there back against a schematic to find the culprit.

This may not be your problem, but I was blowing right front signal bulbs and when replacing the last one I noticed the amber plastic bulb housing was full of water ! I couldn't believe it was sealed so badly. I managed to get it apart and seal it with some silicone sealant - and this was actually a fairly new one since I replaced the original one due to a crack.
