common problem with gear shifter?
So i got my 99 disco sd on Saturday and it doesnt run. When they parked it for me i noticed they left it in neutral, so i put it in park and now its stuck there. It doesnt have a battery in it, but i dont think that should matter for this. I've found that this is a common issue, but im not able to pull the shift **** off. Any ideas on how to get it off and fix the problem?

The shift lock solenoid won't release the shifter until the brake light switch tells it to. You need power for that to happen. So toss a battery in there or hook up some jumper cables, turn the key to Pos II, press the brake and shift into Neutral. You can now disconnect the battery but you won't be able to remove the key. Once you get it out of Park you can open up the console and actually remove that solenoid. That will allow you to shift at will with no regard to the brake being pressed(not necessarily a good thing).

He got it home and it's out front with the key in the ignition and the the Brake on.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Pull up the shifter housing (piece that shifter handle runs through), grasp firmly with both hands (rear and forward corners) and pull straight up, (no need to remove shifter ****), kind of a controlled pull though...since there are a few wires attached and the plastic track for shifter sliding-cover...and then look for loose change below. Our 03 had about three dollars in change wedged down there, and wouldn't go into park at times.
