Default Common Problems

I've got my eyes on a couple of Discovers II's. Just trying to get a heads up on what problems to be looking for.

Head gaskets, leaky valve covers, worn out u-joints in front driveshaft and worn out roto-flex coupler in rear driveshaft, sagging headliner, window regulators, plugged radiator, power steering pump and hoses, ABS/TC/HDC Lights on (3 Amigos), sunroof leaks/not functioning and leaky o-rings on the heater core. Also, listen for any ticks at idle when engine is cold and then when hot. A tick that is only present when hot might indicate a slipped liner.

pick one take it to an independent repair shop that deals with Land rovers and have them inspect it for you. it will be the best money you put into the truck, there is far to much to tell you what to look for.

Thanks for the replies. I intend to use it for an everyday driver. I had a 1997 a few years back, leaked oil like crazy. But didnt look into it much, it mainly stayed in the woods.

Discoveries are great vehicles, but do have a share of issues like most vehicles. I just put mine back together after having a misfire that was caused by a blown head gasket. However, they are very easy to work on for most repairs with the assistance of a workshop manual.

Look through the last few pages on here. Unlike a lot of sites that talk about mods and enhancements, most threads on here are about "what I had to fix" and "what's wrong with my truck" and "should I sell?"

The late 01-02&03 models did not have the center diff lock feature so if that's a concern to you you will want to choose a different year. The info about repurchase inspection is the best you will get. Good luck with your search!
