coolant
OK, so insted of helping my wife clean the house like I was nicely asked I spent part of the afternoon looking at the RAVE CD.
The Discovery II, Range Rover (P38 not Classic), New Range Rover and Freelander all need the coolant changed every 24 months or 30,000 miles, which ever is sooner or corrosion to the engine seals and radiator could occur.
So is this the problem with the head gaskets? How many think that because they have DexCool which is supposed to last 150,000 miles needs to be changed at 30k?
So if DexCool is corrosive then why does Land Rover use it? Is it because it is bio-degradeable?
So if you have a low mileage LR have your coolant changed per the owners manual and maybe you can save yourself $1500 down the road for new head gaskets.
I just thought that this was very interesting, very common problem being caused by owner neglect?

It is in the design of the heads and used to be the composition of the gaskets. Dexcool wasn't introduced to the Disco's until 2K, I think. The design is just prone to leaking. I am doing mine in the spring.
It is not really DexCool, just the maintanance of it. People get leaks, the coolant gets air, and Dexcool is seriosly corrosive with air in it. They suggest you change it so it is serviced more. I had DexCool in mine after flushing for about 20K. I changed my water pump and went back to the regular green stuff. I can tell you that the inside of my cooling system is clean. It looked brand spanking new when I took the old pump off. I had to replace due to failing bearings BTW, and at 150K, I would expect it...
