Cost of Rebuilding Transmission
Took my 2003 Disco 2 out for the weekend, parked it Sunday night and when I went to drive it the next morning it would shift into gears but the engine would just rev. Took it to the mechanic who said there was flakes of aluminum in the transmission fluid so something probably broke within and quoted me 8,000+ to rebuild it. He said this includes a "complete rebuild, with new clutches, torque converter, and all that", but I really just want to fix what is broken or salvage a transmission from somewhere else. Now I am considering trying to sell as is or potentially purchase a used transmission and have them install it. Is this quote reasonable? It seems very high to me. Any advice on what I should do?
Sounds like a "go away" quote to me; if there is an independent Land Rover mechanic nearby I would send the car to them for another diagnosis.
I had something similar happen a few years ago and my local LR mechanic found that it was a broken torque converter and the bill was less than a grand.
If it is actually a bad transmission then the 4HP24 transmission are plentiful and reliable; no need to rebuild so just find a good used transmission and pay a shop to do the swap.
