Default Cost of u joint swap

I replaced my front drive shaft years ago with a proshaft brand, I have to replace the u joints , I'm not set up to do this. I have new u joints and center ball kit, What do you reckon as a ball park figure would a shop charge to put in the new joints and ball on my drive shaft? I'm taking the shaft to them, not attached to truck....

One to two hours labor would be my guess based on how long it takes to do the job.

I did it in my garage with a hammer and an old socket, the old socket was just big enough to fit inside the cap of the u-joint. I squirted some thin oil around the edges and pounded it through one way, removed cap and pounded it back the other way to remove the other cap then do the reverse to reinstall new joint. There are YouTube videos on it. So unless you literally don't have a hammer and an old socket this is one of the easiest jobs you can do. It also helps to remove the zerks before hammering on it.

When I had mine done 8½ years ago the driveline shop just outside Charlotte charged me $50 to dissasemble and reassesmble the driveshaft with my parts, and balance it.

Default shafted

I'm going to just get the tom woods shaft from Lucky 8, I would not use a hammer and socket man lol, damn u joints are expensive, plus you still have to do the center ball , which is a major pia, I've rebuilt the front stock shaft years ago on another D2. Screw that, broke my damn vise......

Where you getting u joints that they're expensive? They're like $5/ea on rock auto. And broke your vice? Must've been one seized up cap.

I agree on the hammer and socket. Tried that one, dicked my driveshaft right good and proper. Bent the darn tongues in enough to bind the u-joint.

I have a hard time trying to get the roller pin bearings to stay in place when rebuilding / reassembling these driveshafts. I rebuilt one years ago for another D2 and it was a pia. In my spare parts stockpile there sits five front driveshafts, but yeah man they want over $30.00 at my local Advanced and O'reilly's.
I needed them in a day so I did'nt even think about looking on Rockauto.

I add some grease to the roller pins inside the cap to help hold them in place.

Question JUKE179r you stated on a post back on March 2018 that a Foxwell nt510 will allow you to view the EKA code. I have a 98 Disco that will not start due to the immobilizer enabled. Could the code reader pull the code from the truck with no running but has power? I really don't want to pay a tow and diagnostic+whatever. If I can if fix let me know thanks.

Yes you can view the EKA code with a Foxwell NT510/520 with battery power. I did this on my 2001 Disco 2 so it should work on your 98 Disco.
PM me if you have other questions about this.
