A couple of newbie questions
Hi,
I just recently purchased an '03 Disco and am starting to go through all of the maintenance items including the front driveshaft rebuild and Disco Mike's service recommendation.
I had the 3 Amigo's lights come on twice now..... They appear to be intermittent as they go away when I shut off the car, but I expect them to return. Are the ABS codes stored? I.e. Can I use an Amigo scanner to retrieve them now or do I need them to be on for it to work?
Also, what is the Electrical ground repair that I have read about? I've searched for details, but haven't been able to find any.
Thanks

The electrical ground (or frame ground, or "earth") connection is the point in any circuit that uses the metal chassis as one side of the circuit; where this point is attched to metal. It needs to be clean and tight, not rusted and corroded. The more amps that flow thru that circuit, the cleaner it must be. The main ground is the one where the negative terminal of the battery is bonded to the chassis. Just follow the big black wire. But other "earths" or grounds are also important. In the RAVE electrical manual you will find drawings of a particular circuit, and here connections have a connector number is shown in tiny print. Look up that number in the electrical librrary connector list and you'll find a pix and the location. Here's the overall locations, and one for the ABS pump.
Are your brakes squeaking, if so that is your problem or at least one of them. No, you can only read the codes with the lights on with a scanner set up to read Rover ABS codes.
If you want some help with this, lets talk.

I have noticed my rear brakes squealing a bit.... From what I recall, the Amigo's lights have come on while I'm stopped at a light tho.... Been considering buying an Amigo scanner but if it won't work unless the lights are on solid then I may hold out for a bit and see if they return.
Previous owner tod me that they only came on before when his wife put in regular gas.... Does that make any sense?

This is relevant to my interests. As many of you know I have the ABS problem and I have squeaky breaks. What does that mean if they squeak? Also I never checked the ground for the ABS pump, where is this located??
Well actually my front driver side rotor is more worn down than the rest. I figured I'd fix it once I replaced all the rotors, pads, and rebuilt the abs system with the new ss brake lines. But if I can enjoy not looking at those lights while I save up $$ for parts I would be happy.
You may have a fault now that won't self clear... and you'll need a scanner to turn them off. At least when you get access to the scanner though, you'll know exactly what the computer thinks is wrong.
Squeaky brakes can cause the 3 amigos to make an appearance and should be dealt with before you set a code and need a scanner to clear them.
New pads, Akebono ceramics are great, rotors if necessary and a full 2 quart DOT 4 brake flush.
