More likely the plug and water, which would shunt out the weak signal produced by the sensor. The standard for failure is quits working (no spark) when engine block hot, like parked at store when you run in for a minute. When block cools spark returns. Pouring cold water on a dead-when-hot sensor is one test to see if it comes back to life.
