I have a VW passat in the driveway that may also have a bad ECU. It's bounced between several mechanics trying to repair a CEL. One managed to blow the motor while changing the car (no idea how). There's no communication with the front O2 sensor. Apparently if one shorts it can damage the output of the ECU. Never had one before.

Fortunately, the Passat only had a broken wire in the harness... It's back to its owners, so I'm back to the LR.

Owner is looking to purchase a used ECU off ebay. Anything special we need to know? I thought I read somewhere that the ECU and alarm controller were matched/linked? I really didn't come across many hits when searching ECU replacement.

Thanks for all the help.

Buying a matched set removes the need to program. You need to know whether the disco has secondary air injection or not.

Sweet - thanks for the link. It does not have SAI. I grabbed a picture of it for verification and it ends in 460. I will pass this information on to the owner.
