D1 CDL into D2 conversion question

They should fit all the D1's. The actual housing did not change from year to year.

Default Boot

I bought a new Land Rover small inner boot and made a bezel to hold it down. I didn't want to spend $60 for the rover boot that was going to be covering my modified disco II tunnel so I found that the small Mr. gasket rubber shift boot fits perfectly and seals the cabin from dust and noise very nicely. Its only about $10 at Orielly's and comes with a bezel and screws that you can form over where your shifter cable goes thru the panel, I just put some black RTV around it and screwed it to the tunnel.

All the D1 CDLs fit all years. The only difference is that the 94/95s (most of them) came withe the extra small boot at the top of the shifter box and the 4 mounting screws that mount the shifter assembly to the trans are 1/2" bolt heads instead of 10mm.

I used the D1 rubber boot with the metal frame. I had to do a little cutting on the metal frame to make it fit. I also used rubber sealant around the metal trim and on the edges where I had to cut the metal trim away to keep the heat from coming up from the transmission tunnel into the center console. I initially installed the D1 CDL with just the foam, but heat was pouring out and my center console switches were very hot from the heat blowing back on them. I went back in and added the rubber boot pictured on the left with slight modification.

So Abran.....will the extra small boot at the top of the D1 shifter box work with the D1 CDL unit I bought from you? I'm confused

Yes, it will work. But, you only need one boot to close off the hole that you are cutting. Use the larger one I sent you and silicone the edge of the hole that is cut to the boot.

Well I am in the middle of the install and needed to vent....WHAT A PIA!!

Had to quit after 5 hrs, just too cold and got very frustrated. I stopped at putting in the D1 Hi/Lo selector housing (pic). Getting the old one out took like 2 hours due to limited space and 14 year old bolts!

Multiple cuts on my hands today, and surely multiple sore 50y/o muscles tomorrow.

For some reason I thought this project would take 2-3 hours, maybe it's just me......

Any way, hopefully clear sailing tomorrow and get this thing buttoned up.

Why are you changing this part out?
