D2 inline thermostat mod ?
i'm running a 180' thermostat and my temps have dropped 20+ degrees .....i dont notice any difference in the heater core.....and the truck still heats up fairly quick.....
do this mod and you wont look back.......btw i still get 250-300 miles to a tank

It you run it to cold your MPG will drop, it will cause excessive carbon build up on the intake valves and your heater wont work for crap and you will burn up your cats.
With this mod I think you guys could run a 190* t-stat, the DI uses a 195*.
Your truck will run at the t-stat temp, no hotter unless it is working hard or there is a cooling problem.
The coolant heats up, t-stat opens, coolant runs through radiator, coolant cools, t-stat closes, repeat.
This happens as long as the engine is running, the t-stat does not just open once it reaches temp and then stay open until you shut the engine off.
It is constantly opening and closing.
My truck has a 195* t-stat and she runs at 196-198*, if she idles for 20 min or more then she hits 205*
I have not taken her off road since the new fan clutch was installed so I can not attest to those temps yet.

You are correct as always...We did this mod a few years ago on RR 4.0 se. We basicly just punched out the thermostats so it would run freely. They do this in the islands alot as well as drill and bolt fan clutches. I live in florida so it's a give me. i have shot IR temps at around 160 degrees under hood at 12:00 noon...thats just engine compartment air tempeture. Today is already 97 and it's 11:30 and my truck is black. I can get away as my thermo is almost always open. For a week in febuary, it was 50 degrees and i took a trip across to naples 100 miles at 75- 80 mph. My temps went down to the 1/3rd mark and i watched my mpg display go from 18 mpg to 9 mpg...yea it just started to gulp it down. I would suggest a iron block, a audible overheat warrning...for christ sake the seat belt is enough to send you into a rage....sorry never use a seat belt, and a inline thermo located where every other thermo is located... I will have to admit the first time i saw the LR thermostat i thought to myself... "What Fu$cking moron came up with this idea".....And for the extra 400 lbs for the block....who gives a crap...it's already 2000 lbs heaver than a defender 110... It's a pig already..... If they where so good they would be still making them like the defender....
actually an engineer designed it. If you look at the design of the manifold you realize the old style doesn't fit so you need to change the position of the thermostat. Plus with all these modifications and tons of money spent on attempting to fix something not broken. How much money are you actually saving? And lets face it these engines run into issues cause people are lazy and don't check for common things like coolant leaks and the like.

You are correct Rovin... A engineer did design it and was approved by numerous other engineers...So ...The world is full of Fu$cking stupid engineers and the design of this power plant was a result of saving money and not haveing to come up with something that has zero redundency... I cant even count the countless times you would overheat any old iron block. Wait till it's cool, add water or antifreeze and continue on you good old way.. Head gaskets, oil pump issues, replaceing the stupid heart valve thermo numerous times over the life of the truck... Give me a break already...If that power plant design is good ...I am Fu$cking genius......
Then come Feb when it really gets cold you wont even beable to drive it unless you are wearing your long johns and have one of those electric heaters that sit on your dash and plug into your cig lighter and even then you will have it turned up to defrost the windshield so you can see.
And then when your throttle freezes open because you by-passed the throttle body heater and there is no underhood heat because your t-stat is to low and you drive onto Lake Huron and get shot by the border guards as you enter Canada...
Wait until late November when the snow and wind starts coming off of Lake Huron, your heater wont work and you will get 150 miles per tank.

i love this guy.....LOL
funny when people that have not done this exact mod talk.....this isnt like punching out your thermostat.....so dont even make me go there....and i'll we did was drop 15' off the thermostat........its works just fine and the heater core wont have any issues come winter time...
this is how it would be if this was a 60's buick carbed motor.....
you guys need to stop drinking the hateraid lol...
and another thing....replacing head gaskets isnt supposed to be a routine thing....in any engine.....the pressure operated thermostat in discovery's is the problem....then inline thermostat is better

But a '60's Buick didnt have any sensors to tell a computer how things were running, or at what temp there were running.
It just dumped fuel into the engine, thats why they got 12mpg.
But back then gas was cheap, $.31 per gallon.
Personally I dont care what you do, set it on fire and roll it down a hill.
All I am doing is playing devils advocate and trying to keep you from having problems later.
