So about two weeks ago this horrid chirping/squealing noise arose. First it was quiet, then it got louder and louder and louder. Then it disappeared. It sounds like its coming from the underbelly close to the front of the car. And it only chirps while the car is under load (when i'm moving and accelerating) The mystery noise was gone for about a week then it came back worse than ever. At first I thought it could be a driveshaft issue but typically driveshafts make a clunking noise when the U joint is shot.

Check out the video below. I know its damn near impossible to diagnose a car from a sound and description so i'm not expecting much help, so instead I was wondering if anyone had some tips or tricks for locating the noise.

 

still could be your front drive shaft. Just raise both front tires go under and turn wheels to check your shaft is tight.

 

What other bearings are involved with the front drive shaft?

 

Usually the u joints had to be checked due to premature wear and also the double cardon which contains the bearings. Check if there are grease fittings between the U joints and grease them. It would be better to raise the truck so you can physically check them while turning the tire.

 

Update: So I removed my front driveshaft to take it for a spin and the chirping noise is gone! Not suprised.. I have the 04' model so I am able to lock the center diff and drive off. I understand that all of the power that originally was going to all four wheels is now going to two but I was wondering how dangerous that could be. With light acceleration I should be okay for at least a couple of days, right? Is it the highway speeds or the acceleration that puts stress on the rear axle?

You'll be fine. You now have just an old-fashioned rear wheel drive truck.

BTW, when I upgraded my driveshaft years ago I bought the U-joints and the centering ball and had a local driveline shop do the work. But the price of good quality, fully greasable driveshafts has come down in recent years and I now wouldn't bother doing what I did. Just buy a new one and install it. But make sure all three U-joints are greasable.
