Question DI Tranny Filter without removing y-pipe? Who has done it

I read recently that you could pull the tranny pan on a DI without the need to remove the y-pipe. As I recall, the poster pulled the nuts and bolts on the crossmember and moved ti forward (it doesn't look like moving it back will provide any more access). The pan could then be manuevered out and the filter was then accessible. I have searched and searched but havent' been able to find the post. I looked last night and it looks like there is only about 1 inch between the crossmember and the cats. If I removed the nuts and bolts of the crossmember and knocked it forward an inch, is that enough to get the tranny pan out? Things look very tightly meshed in and around the tranny pan. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Phil

1999 DI 105k miles, inoperable tranmission, I am hoping it is a clogged filter......

Some have done it, most can remove the pan with just loosening the "Y" pipe and moving it a little, many just remove it.
I would try to just loosen and move it as necessary.

Both.
By the way, when was the filter last changed, if it was with the last service, have you considered doing just a drain and fill? What fluid are you going to use and have you considered adding a bottle of Lucas to it for a happier tranny.

I disconnected thy y-pipe from the manifolds, took the rubber hangers off the rest of the exhaust, and that allowed just enough drop to the exhaust to slide the crossmember far enough forward to do everything.

Mike, this is the truck that has the transmission that is not engaging. I can move the shifter into r, d, 3, 2 or 1 and nothing happens. Checking the dip stick, it appears that it is several quarts overfilled (eventhough the fluid level is accurate). I am thinking that either the pump has failed and thus the fluid is not being pumped to the upper portions of the transmission or the filter is clogged and the fluid in not passing through the filter to the pump. I thought that I would pull the filter and take a look before I swapped the transmission for a used one. The fluid is clean and clear, unburnt and changed about 3000 miles ago. Phil

Spencerfitch, normally I would agree wholeheartedly and I may end up having to do that. I have limited time and if it needs a new tranny, I will have a shop do that rather than try it myself. I have three different options, 1. tranny with 118k installed for $600, 60-day warranty; 2. tranny with 78k miles installed for $950, 90-day warranty 3. tranny with 95k miles no warranty $1400 (from well respected Rover shop, the other two are by experienced but non-rover specific shops). I am leaning towards option 2 because of the miles on the tranny. Hopefully, all it needs is a new filter.........I put the odds at less than 25% that a filter will fix the problem. Phil

a well known rover shop won't break every freaking bolt like in other shops.
