What was the culprit?! Same problem

Nope, but I took out the module from my tail lights to rule it out, but it keeps blowing the tail light fuse.

 

If it keeps blowing the fuse something is shorted. You'll probably have to go over the wiring for the brake lights very carefully. These things can be hard to find sometimes.

 

is there a wiring diagram in the RAVE? Just not sure how to trace them without it

Some of the DTC codes we may encounter are not in Rave and may not be applicable to our vehicles. Are getting an engine light? Can your clear them and do the return? I usually do a web search for code adding Rover to it. https://www.google.com/search?q=J2012&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

I saw the same problem today (diff light was on, goes off when I press the brake, and can't get out of park . . . also no brake lights). Having replaced the brake switch recently I jumped to the assumption that I had gotten a lemon, and bought another one, but that did not fix the problem. Realized that it must have been a short, and tracked it down to a trailer wire that had been pinched when I was unhitching it earlier this morning. Fuse #25 was blown. Patched the trailer wire, replaced the fuse, and I'm rolling!

 

mine was a short in the transfer case wire and/or a short in a wire to a reverse light. I found both and fixed them.
