I got a $20 code reader from amazon, which I've used. It doesn't read real time engine temps though, at least not that I know of.

A code reader is cheaper than a code scanner, which also reads and resets codes, plus shows sensor values, like coolant temp. All out the OBDII port. You can also get a blue tooth adapter and app for a phone, a program and cable for a PC, etc. Here's pix of why you want a scanner, as the gauge is designed to be an idiot light with a pointer. IMHO the operation of Rovers at elevated temperature for months or years while owners bask in the glow of "steady as a rock" displays is a factor in engine problems. Most of us would react if we saw temps rising every couple of days. This is a case of what you don't know can hurt ya.

Or if you have a laptop with bluetoth or an android phone you can get a $12 OBD2 bluetooth dongle from Amazon and read the temps in real time. I have a laptop with bluetooth and using digimoto lite which is available free online I can monitor temps, O2 readings and any other parameters monitored by the engine. I have an analog temp gauge in my truck which reads a sensor mounted in the hose just like yours and my temps through the ECU and the gauge are too close to notice any difference. There will likely be more of a spread in very cold temperatures but it won't be enough to be concerned about.

How close? The reason I ask is I always felt the remote stat of the D2 introduced some error by being so far from the block.

As I said, I have an analog gauge so as far as I'm concerned, they are the same. The difference between 184 and 186 is hard to discern, but as far as I can tell the difference is no more than 2 or 3 degrees. Now that it is cold out, I will check the temps again but I would be willing to bet that it is no more than 5 degrees.

Seem logical. Good to know. So you are running the 180F stat?

Ok, so I can assume my temps are 2-5 degrees higher than what the gauge says.

Yup. I'd link up all of the associated threads, but basically I started out by grafting a gauge pod on my dash and installed Auto Gage (Autometer) 1 1/2 inch oil pressure and temp gauges. The temp gauge showed consistent temps in the 200 to 215 degree range (as well as a 1 1/2 inch analog gauge will). I pulled out the 190 stat and installed a Motorad 180 and the indicated temps dropped 10 to 15 degrees. I then picked up the Bluetooth dongle and confirmed running temps in the range of 190 to 198 range.
