I have a '03 DII SE with a damaged and frozen cruise control cable. The cable is frayed at one end and will not move through the housing as a result. The previous owner swears that the cruise control was working until the cable fraying became bad enough that the cable would no longer move through the housing. Any ideas on how to replace this cable - anyone done this exact repair?
I'm also having trouble finding a new stock part to replace it with, and have only been able to locate used options. I'd rather go new if at all possible. Already checked with Atlantic British and they don't carry it.
Also, any input on the proper routing and/or cable holders/guides for the cruise control cable would be appreciated.
@DiscoID that is some dead, mine is just a straight run, you can see it in the image below. There is really no issue with a used one just make sure it moves cleanly and lubricate. Use something like this for motorcycle cables https://fortnine.ca/en/moose-cable-l...RoCIc8QAvD_BwE
Thanks for the reply and the picture. My cable is running on the front side of the oil cap which is probably the reason for the tension and fraying at the junction.
@DiscoID Took a look at mine going in front the oil tube is way too much out of line. Ideally with cables like that you want nice straight lines and gentle curves, it reduces wear and internal binding.
Thanks. I'm sure the improper routing by the old owner is what caused the problem to occur in the first place. It barely makes the stretch for that distance, so I'm sure that the tautness of the cable and housing is what caused the inner cable to fray as you see in the pics.
Oh well, lesson learned, and I'll be sure to route the replacement properly. Haven't given up on trying to find a new stock source, but I think a used one might be my only option.
Sorry about the delay -- many disruptions in regular routines here in NYC.
I will be heading out today on a number of errands, and could drop this cruise control cable into the post for you. Just send me your postal address sometime this morning.
