Default Disco 2 Driveline Questions

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to troubleshoot some driveline noises and need some help. I've done some searches, and still have a few questions.

I've got an 04 D2, which I purchased a couple of years ago. Love it.

Over the past days/weeks, I've been getting some squeaking from the driveline which I've narrowed down to the front propshaft. I'm running a Great Basin Rovers Custom Heavy Duty Driveshaft. I feel like I do a pretty good job keeping it greased - every 3K or so. I'm not sure how to tell if it's the spider, the centering ball, or something else. Unfortunately, I don't have time to tackle the repair myself, so I'm going to take it to my indy, whom I trust reasonably well. I'd just like to point them in the right direction. I've linked two videos which might help.

The first is a video while driving. The squeak is noticeable.

The second is a video from under the truck while up on jackstands. You can see the condition of the shaft, and the u-joints - I don't think it's too bad. I re-greased them today hoping that would take care of the issue, but the squeak persists. As a sidenote, you can see some fluid buildup on the bottom of the truck and transfer case. I know it's a Rover, but is that so much I should be concerned about replacing all the seals in the driveline?

Also there are some grating-type sounds coming from either the transfer case or the CDL. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I'm reluctant to drive very far until I've got a better grasp on what's going on for fear of grenading the transmission/transfer case/exhaust. . .

Thanks!!!

If it were me, I'd pull that prop shaft out and inspect it when it isn't connected to everything else. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with mine until I did just that (turned out to be the center ball)

Good luck ....

+2.............it sounds like a dry bearing. With the shaft out and the CDL engaged then try it on a rolling test, say, about 20-30 mph. If it disappears it's the shaft at fault probably.

Normally I'd be thinking 'wheel bearing' but it appears to be coming from underneath in the video.

That's what my driveshaft sounded like when the needle bearings were bad. I couldn't see it with the driveshaft on, nor feel any play in the shift, but it was real obvious when I took it off. Mine was very close to catastrophic failure. I would pull that Shaft and look at the joints very carefully before you drive it.

Thanks guys, pulled the driveshaft this morning and immediately could tell the centering ball is the issue. Drove a little with the diff locked and no noise. Any issues if I drive a little with the shaft out and the diff locked?
