Default Disco 2 with P38 engine thats leaking from the front?

OK guys, this rig is leaking like a screen door... I had a rebuilt P38 engine put in my 04 Disco as its better overall and no headgasket failures.. so ive heard...

Anyways, there is oil all over the front of the engine (water pump, alternator, compressor) and all over the drivers side of the engine bay. It's on the shocks, eveything on that side of the engine bay is covered in oil...

The passenger side of the engine bay has spatter from the calamaty going on on the other side, but otherwise no oil on the passenger side..

So i know its leaking onto the fanbelt and spraying the oil onto the drivers side of the bay. Does that tell you where its coming from?? I literally have oil spots on my brushgaurd! I know trucks and that is just beside me how oil is getting all the way out there... and of course my rig is rust free underneath and the back due to the nice protecting layer of oil...

The fan is a pull fan wich pulls air through the radiator meaning it is pushing air past the motor so oil from behind the front would not get up there right??

Is there a common failure I should look for?? I put dye in the oil, but havent seen anything from it yet...

Thanks guys!!

If you are sure it is Motor oil, and it is in front of the fan, it is either an arterial spurt from the engine or, more likely, you have a problem with your oil cooler. That wouldn't be a common problem in my book but that's the only place oil travels in front of the fan.

Is it traveling through the radiator? Sounds to me like a rock broke the oil cooler or maybe there is a leak at one of the compression fittings for the oil cooler. Maybe the one on the driver side. If you look under your Disco just slightly to the passenger side of the main pulley, you will see two metal hoses that exit the front cover. One is on the bottom, and one is on the passenger side. They have large nuts at the end. They transition to flexible hoses that go to compression fittings on both sides of the radiator. Those are the oil cooler lines. Follow the one to the driver side and look for evidence of a leak. But if you see it seeping through the radiator, then it would be the cooler (smallish radiator) itself, in front of the main radiator. Let me know what you see. Not a huge deal to change out. You may have to remove the upper fan shroud to get a good look from above.

If you don't have an oil cooler (some Discos don't, ridiculously) then someone is pouring oil on your truck.

Oil pump gasket, maybe? Check your power steering fluid too. There is a tube right underneath the radiator to cool the fluid. that pipe get corroded sometimes and leak.

How long has the engine been in the D2 and leaking? Year, months, weeks? Gunped sounds as if this has be going on for longer than a week. Why not degrease and clean so you can see rather than guess?

I degreased the engine and drove it a bit...
Is this "worst case" senario?
Fresh oil from the crank shaft pulley...

Could be as simple as the cam sensor just above the pulley or a little more complicated front main seal at the pulley.

Great job on the cleaning!

Like Abran said there is a cam sensor right above that pulley. If you take the fan off you can weasel a small (8mm wrench) in to be sure it is tight. But I bet the leak is from the front main seal, which is behind the main pulley. If you get a light on the area behind the main pulley you should be able to tell whether the oil is coming from above the pulley or below the pulley.

Another place to look is the oil sender, which is above and to the left (facing the engine) of the main pulley. It should have a wire going to it. Mine leaked once, and the oil traveled to the pulley area, and that was a pretty simple swap.

If that's where all of your oil is coming from, it could be a ten dollar fix for a new front seal. You would have to remove the front pulley (and probably the oil pan, so you can immobilize the crank shaft in order to get the bolts off of the pulley), whiich is a little bit of an ordeal but anyone can do it.

The cam sensor has an o ring that is often neglected when doing a service.

You might want to change it regardless of actual leak location.

is the cam sensor the same thing as the Crank Position sensor?? I replaced mine a year or so ago and that would defientely offer an option for a oil leak if the O-ring was very important....
