Disco 2 starts but dies immediately (after battery died/jump) any ideas?
Hey folks,
My disco II/2004 battery died this evening, I made the mistake of leaving my lights on for about 15 mins too long, then came out and it was too dead to start.. Got a jump start from a friend and it starts right up then shuts off immediately, doesn't really even take gas if i hit the pedal, it starts enough to run for a second then just shuts off.. Thinking that it might be a security system issue, I let the battery charge up, then I closed the hood and locked and unlocked my doors with my key fab a few times, but this hasn't helped, tried several times now, ran perfectly before the battery went dead
. Anyone else had this happen? Any ideas?
thanks,
-mike

I have a D2 (2002). I once knocked the "intake to throttle body" clamp because I forgot to tighten it. It would start and run for about half a second, then stop...
Check that location...Might be as simple as that?!

Just following up on this, I replaced the battery today and it started right up, so even though I was getting a good jump from another battery and we let it charge up for a bit, my old battery was not enough to keep it running. Thanks for the suggestions on here.

My experience is that the D2 charging is not good to the battery when you go short distances or around town only. I thought I needed a new battery just after 3 years, because it was getting weaker and it struggled cranking. Then I went on a 4,000 mile trip and that reconditioned the battery. Next time I will try an AGM battery and see if it does cope with the D2 better.
Typically, it takes about 7 miles of drive time to replenish the amount of draw/drain the battery suffered from cranking over to start, and that's if it starts right up...in cold conditions or a poor running engine will draw even more amperage. So, for that owner that drives a couple miles to work...it is slowly, day after day...never fully being replenish.
Number one reason an alternator fails, is constantly charging a weak or tired battery. The alternator isn't a battery charger, it just replenishes the battery and helps maintain electrical items on vehicle while running. So, if a battery is completely dead...and you simply "give it a jump"...you are asking way to much out of the alternator. A completely dead battery should be charged with a stand alone battery charger, until it is fully charged...then load tested...if passes...recharged again...and you will be good. A good rule of thumb is...just replace your battery every five years, or sooner if you are seeing slower cranking.
