Default Disco 2 TD5 ... bad engine tapping noise!??

Sorry if it's a thread that has been covered many times before .. newbie here.
Think I cooked the Disco a bit having not realised I lost all coolant from a hose, and typical temp gauge just sat there saying yup everything normal .. not!
Result appears to be tapping, ticking noise, sounds quite high up in the engine?
The Disco is a '99 TD5 diesel with 150k, been mended and coaxed along over 11 years of ownership and not really ready to throw in the towel yet .... does anyone know if we are talking cylinder sleeves, lifters, tapets or what??
There is no oil in the coolant and no water in the oil. Is she dead, can she be mended, but not for silly money!

TD5's are as rare as rocking horse poo on this site so you'd be better on a Canadian, Australian or UK forum.

Having said that, I am a 2003 TD5 D2 owner. It is unusual to overheat the engine but it does happen occasionally. There are no adjustable tappets on the TD5, hydraulic only, so that's ruled out. There are no bore liners as the block is cast iron, so another ruled out. It's a difficult one to nail down as there are very few causes of engine noises. You state it's a 1999, how many miles on the odometer? If possible can you post an audio or video of the noise you are concerned about? Also it may pay to run a compression test on each cylinder, the differential criteria is in the RAVE workshop manual which is available on here as a download. Post the results on here and we can work on from there.
