Default Disco Gear/Transfer noise rumble ID

Can any body help me identify the likely source of a new noise from my drivetrain?
I have a 1996 Disco 1, manual 300 tdi ES which has just started to make a sort of deep rumble/grinding noise when driving forwards under moderate load upwards. It is not there at light throttle or gentle cruising , but comes in as I increase the power. Also it does not seam to be there on over-run either.
When sitting in the drivers seat it appears to come from the transmission area in the middle.
The external drive parts look OK so I am assuming that it is in the gear box and transfer case.
Does anybody have any ideas of the likely source and how long it will be until it goes completely, or if i will get nay warning ? It is my daily driver so I need to plan the repair.
Thanks

Most are auto here in the states, but I would suggest you change/inspect the fluid in both. If it is the t-case gears, it could lock up any time..

thanks for your response.
The transfer box oil level is OK, next is to check the main gearbox R380 early version.

did you pull your driveshafts?
wiggling the u-joints with driveshafts installed will not tell you if (1) or more are binding up.

It's a pain in the ***, but I'd pull 'em and see how smooth they move.

luck,greg

Not yet but will try that.
They were examined by a mechanic, but he did not remove anything, so maybe did not see it properly.
Thanks
