Default disco stuck in park

My 98 disco wouldn't shift out of park this morning and the break lights don't work. Any one know whether it is a relay or switch? I checked fuses and they all seem fine.

many thanks

Dave

You have a brake light switch that has failed. This component also is part of the shift interlock system, so when the switch goes you lose the ability to move the shifter out of the Park position with the engine running. Read the info at this link on my web-site:

I had the same problem in my 2000 Discovery. The brake light switch was bad. The LR dealer had the switch for $13.00. The time to install was about 10 mintues.

The most important thing was when this happen I was at work and ready to drive home. It would not shift from park to reverse. I removed the cover from the center shifter and pushed the small pin that holds the shifter in park. The cover will pop out with very little prying.

I hope this helps you out.

Phil
