I am looking to purchase my first Land Rover. A 2004 Discovery v8. I am planning on viewing this weekend but am puzzled as to if it has a centre diff lock or not.
On the centre console is a sticker indicating that you move the lever to the side to engage diff lock but the owner says it won't move.
There is no marking on the actual lever itself other than H/N/L. I have seen other levers with diff lock markings on them.

Here's a pic of the transfer case shifter in my '99 DII. It's the cable-actuated shifter from an '04. Please note that with the differential lock NOT engaged the shifter "leans" far to the right.

When you see and drive the truck it will be easy to check whether or not it has the center diff lock. Just use the instructions pasted below to try to engage it.

All '04 DIIs sold in in the U.S. had the center differential lock feature. You don't say where you are located, but you spelling of "centre" indicates you may not be in the U.S.

 

Any US 2004 should have the diff lock, but I think it's unusual for the lever to not have the correct markings. The lever not moving is often because the cable has seized, but this can usually be fixed.
The presence of a lockable transfer case can be confirmed by getting under the truck and feeling on top of the front of the transfer case itself. If there is a nipple sticking up (which in this this case should have a short arm and a cable attached to it) then it's lockable. If there is just a smooth plate then it's not lockable.

 

The aforementioned nipple is in the green circle. The arrow points towards the front of the truck. If the area in the green circle is smooth then there is no CDL. If there's a large cable assembly attached to the nipple then the CDL is present.
