Default Discovery 2 Crankshaft seal - Corteco 15030309B

Thought I put this out there for those who maybe struggling with a Crankshaft shaft seal leak. I've had an ongoing very small leak since I got my Disco years ago. I've already replaced the timing cover when I did the oil pump, and after that I'd replaced the Crank seal with the LR OE version, twice. I had also speedi-sleeved the Harmonic balancer with the second OE seal, which helped, a lot, but a small leak still came back a few days later.

So, I did my research thing, trying to see if there was a better fix. I saw someone somewhere refer to the fact that the Corteco seal was a smaller diameter, but I couldn't find any actual info to confirm it, so, I bought one to find out for myself.

Yep, this seal is much tighter on my sleeved Harmonic balancer shaft, and, after a couple weeks driving, I still have no leaks. I took a couple pics to demonstrate the differences in the seal spring, which are blatantly visible...

LR OE seal on top, Corteco seal on bottom. Obviously a noticable difference in spring diameters...

I did not think to measure the Corteco seal before I put it in, but I did find it reported to be 1.917" inner diameter.
I measured the LR OE seal that I removed from my Disco to be a 1.935" inner diameter.
Perhaps my 9 month old used seal was opened up wider than when I put it in, I don't know, but I think it's pretty easy to see why it was leaking from those measurements.

I'll keep an eye on it, and report back if/when it starts leaking again. But for now, this seal has already lasted longer than any of the OE seals I wasted money on. Hope that helps somebody....Good luck guys 👍

Thanks. And also report back in a few months if it’s still dry.
