Discovery II Automatic box transmission shift 1st to 2nd gear
Hi Guys,
Just finished changing the transmission filter in the Discovery II transmission the 4HP22EF.
Wondering--
When you go from 1st gear to 2nd gear..
Is your shift a very slow and mushy shift?
My shift is about 1 second long.
And, you can really hear it shifting.
The shift from 2nd to third is the blink of an eye as is the rest of them.
Is your first to second gear shift like this?

HI Mike,
I had the engine off and put a whole bottle of Lucas Transmission fix stuff into the pan.
Put the pan back up.
I used your advice on the DEX/MER 75,000 mile transmission fluid in the red bottle and put that in.
I filled it right up to where it was coming out the fill hole bottom.
Then
Started up the Rover.
Put it in neutral.
Put the parking brake on.
Crawled back under there and put in 1.5 containers more of the same trans fluid.
I wanted to put in more as there may be air in the system.
and
The DISCO I I have has me start the engine, put it in neutral and fill until it is on the right place on the dip stick.
Last week..
I had put in the fluid with the engine cold and off the normal way.
I put the fluid right up to the bottom of the fill hole.
Next day - I started the Discovery II in the morning and I heard
a gurgling noise like it was really low.
So, I stopped driving it.
And, when the new trans filter came in - I put in the new filter.
Lucas transmission stuff.
Filled the transmission to the fill hole.
Then started it up.
Neutral.
Put in 1.5 more containers of fluid.
Put the cap back on the fill hole.
I don't hear the gurgling noise now.
The first to 2nd shift has always been this way since I bought this beast.
It is not fast and quick like the 2nd to third shift.
I would say it takes 1/4 of a second to shift.
It is very deliberate.
Does not jerk at all.
Just sounds strange.
I have never owned a Discovery II so I don't know how it should sound when things are as they should be.
