Discovery II makes clunk sounds when going in gear :(
Hi guys, i recently purchased this 03 Discovery II, automatic transmission, v8 gasoline engine.
Itīs in pretty good condition and seems it had a good life with its previous owner.
But this is driving me nuts, i get this HARD clunk sound whenever i shift from Park to Reverse or Drive, and whenever i give gas or let go the gas pedal.
Iīve heard and read, that all LR do this and it is pretty normal, but i think itīs way too hard on mine.
I had the truck up on a lift today, and noticed that the front driveshaft has a whole lot of play in it, and the clunk sound comes from either the front diff or the transfer case, i had someone start the truck and put it in gear when it was up in the lift and could hear some weird sounds coming from the front diff, and every time the gas pedal was pushed, it clunked.
As i said, i donīt know if this is normal, but it gets annoying rather fast when driving in the city.
Can somebody pinpoint me in the right direction?

When that drive shaft goes, it will blow a massive hole in your transmission case.

There are options out there for every budget.
One of the best replacement HD shafts is the Tom Woods replacement. Pricey, but it's also bulletproof.
Good luck.

First thoughts are the front driveshaft and then if OK the diff itself.
Often the backlash in the front driveshaft if not attended to immediatedly helps to destroy the front diff. Diffs don't generally 'break' something is usually contributory to breaking them, backlash in the front driveshaft, backlash in the transfer box, lack of correct oil, slack halfshafts or CV's, rough offroad handling, etc there are many combinations of reasons why the diff breaks but on rare occasions they are known to break on their own account.

MY understanding is the actual problem is with LR is they use the same gears front and rear.
Now you have a power side to a gear and a coast side to every gear, you cant have both.
when you run the gear in reverse rotation you put the power on the coast side of the gear. the weak side causing it to wear at a higher rate.
hence the reason that why disco eat front diffs but the rear are always fine, the rear are running on the power side of the gear, while the front is running on the coast. jmho

Well, iīm back.
Sorry for not responding this thread in such a long time, but a business trip took waaaay longer than expected and i had litttle to no time for this matter.
Anyways, itīs not the driveshaft, itīs the front diff, it has a lot of play in it, so Alex, if you happen to have that diff you offered to me, and you are willing to ship it to Miami, iīll take it out of your hands ASAP lol.
Iīll keep you guys posted!
