Default Discovery Purchase Guidance

I'm looking at Discos for a daily driver and would like a little guidance.

It probably will not be offroad that much, yet it might get a 2" lift and a brush guard, etc. (I have an 88 YJ 350TPI Jeep that is built for serious offroading).

I'd like to be able to pull my car hauler (20' steel 2700lbs with brakes) trailer with my YJ on board, I also have a WW steel 16x8' (2400lbs) enclosed trailer. I usually do this with my Dodge 2500 Cummins but I'm selling it next week....so while I'm not looking to replace the extreme towing abilities of my Dodge I DO pull a trailer from time to time.

I sell real estate so I need something that is nice with a little room...don't want a car.

My first goal is to buy as low a mileage Disco for as cheap as possible. I can find 03-04 models with under 80k or slightly above, for anywhere from 7500-10k. I've read that the 03's have engine issues and no CDL, which would be nice to have.

So it seems that you might want to buy a 99.5-01 with the CDL or the 04 with the 4.6 and CDL. I've seen some very low mileage 01's for 6-7K...which is really what I want to spend.

I've driven RR, Discos and Defenders before so I'm pretty familiar with their offroad capabilities, low MPG and various reputations for maintenance but my wife has an 07 Tahoe and I don't feel a need to duplicate...not a fan of Asian SUV's and Ford and Dodge don't make anything I want... besides, I like the Rovers and quite frankly they are pretty much a steal for what you get in return. I suspect it's because of poor MPG primarily, but hey.. my Cummins only gives me 15MPG no matter how I drive it.

Pros...cons...thoughts?

I appreciate any guidance.

Brad

This is pretty simple, go with the 04. Bigger engine without oil pump issues and the best of everything offered in the Disco series. Plus it has CDL with the shifter. 99-mid 01 have CDL in the t-case but no shifter to engage it in the cab. I can't imagine you would want to have to stop and climb under the truck to engage the CDL when you're taking a client to see real estate.
