Yes, the D2 usesZF 4 speed xmission. A very experienced mechanic I know, with over 3 decades of working on Rovers, told me that these transmissions are almost bulletproof. That has been my experience, having put well over 200,000 miles on one in my 1991 Range Rover classic. I just read in a magazine the other day about the latest ZF 8 speed transmissions. They are putting them in top notch Audi and many, many other vehicles from numerous other makers. Obviously the 8 speed is among the best, if not the best in the industry. I have become a firm believer in them.

I don't doubt this, but why do most of the Audi A8s on craigslist have either transmission issues or a replaced transmission?

My Jaguar XJR had the ZF, and it was known in the Jag community to be bullet proof. The non-super charged Jags were the most common Transmission failure vehicles, but, they did not have the ZF. I was under the understanding the XJR used the same transmission as many high HP Mercedes.
So, even with the extra horsepower in my Super Charged XJR, I never feared the trans. I sold it with almost 160k miles, and not a lick of trans issues.

I sold my 500SL, and my Jaguar XJR at the same time, to the same person, then bought the DII with my new money.
