Default driveshaft rebuild question

Hey, i had a noise comming from the front driveshaft area i could hear from the cabin. It sounds like a squeeky mouse. The shaft has no rust and looks almost new as the bolts and nuts that attach it to diff and transfer case. i put up on jack stands as i could only hear when in gear. I let it run on jackstands but could not hear it. I put in neutral and started to turn front wheel back and forth a bit to get front shaft moving and can hear the squeek. very faint squeek. It is comming from the back double cardian maybe the centering ball... I am going to pull today and rebuild. i am really debating not going serviceable as it another item to forget to grease and go bad. I was considering wraping the cat and making a heat sheild. I ran truck for 20 minutes and the cat did not make the shaft that hot as i could put my hand on it and hold it. I live in florida so it's always 100 degrees on the truck.... Anyone want to chime in?

thanks Chris

Hey Chris...I just want to eliminate the obvious, but you did replace the front u-joints with greaseable ones already, correct?

no, i just got the truck and has been sitting in my driveway so i can fix the pile...

The noise is comming from the double not the front one next to the cat. I have read where you can just replace the double and check the centering ball if it needs replacing. It's weird ..well like all the kookie stuff on this truck as i went outside about a hour later and could not duplicate the sound turning the shaft...

Replace all three u-joints and the centering ball kit as soon as possible. If you think it is a chore to grease every 5K miles, it really is not. It is a very simple 10-15 minute job. And not to mention, much easier (and of course cheaper) to replace than a transmission. Though I do recommend letting a driveline shop do the rebuild, unless you have lots of patience, beer and a blow torch to get the centering ball out.

I used these parts, ordered from here:http://www.rockauto.com/

1 quantity "center ball kit" Precision part #617

3 quantity "u-joints" Precision part #344

Read this thread (including the links): https://landroverforums.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=29302
Lube it every time you change the oil and you won't forget, unless of course you forget to change your oil.
If you use sealed u-joints you should plan on rebuilding your propshaft every 40k miles.
