Thumbs down EBC Greenstuff brake pad review

After reading a lot of opinions about which brake pads to use, I thought it might be useful if I posted a relative objective review of one particular brand. Kauffman Tires put EBC Greenstuff pads on my 2004 Discovery II 5,000 miles ago, 6000 series on the rear and 7000 series up front. I also installed new Napa Ultra Premium rotors on both axles.

The first 3 photos are of the front wheel 170 miles of driving. Note that the entire wheel was cleaned, even the inside, before the test began. The last 2 photos are of the same wheel after 350 miles. I wiped a streak on the rim so that you can see what the wheel should look like under the brake dust.

IMO, these pads are HIGHLY OVERRATED! The dust is very high, and not much better than the factory pads. I have a Mitsubishi Eclipse that was even worse with dust, but when I put some ceramic pads on it the dust virtually disappeared. Not so with EBC's. As far as stopping power, I don't have any objective data so I can only say, quite subjectively, that they are comparable to the OEM pads. The EBC pads, though, are completely silent, unlike the noisy OEM pads.

If you want to cut down on brake dust, THESE ARE NOT THE PADS TO BUY! If you don't care about anything except getting quiet braking, then these will serve you well.

I'm not saying EBC pads are not dusty (this is a fairly common complaint) but you can't really judge a brake pad until it has 1000 miles or so as it takes a while for the pads to break in. Most pads have a break in layer on them too. My pads (non EBC metallic pads) were very dusty for the first 1000 miles but now are great.

Point taken, but I have five thousand miles on my pads. EBC told me to wait 1,000 miles for the dust to settle, so I decided to wait a lot longer to eliminate any speculation. My complaint is that EBC advertises them as "...THE ULTIMATE SUV/4x4 FRONT END PAD. They will stop faster and last longer with almost zero brake dust and are EBC's premium offering for heavy 4x4s". This, quite frankly, is nothing but false advertising.

Ha! yes did not read your post where you said 5k miles. I hear the yellow pads are even worse. Get some black steel wheels problem solved I don't really buy into the EBC hype and believe that in these trucks solid rotors and metallic or ceramic pads are best.

I am glad that I read this, I had considered getting these pads, will probably just stick with factory now. Has anybody used a pad that has had relatively no dust?

Thanks Duke for testing those for us.

I went for LR pads front & Rear and Disc Brake Australia(DBA) for rotors. Tempered, vented, drilled front, and drilled slotted rear. No brake squeal after 1200 miles. Now silent and work great for about 20,000 miles. I'm not a heavy braker but I do a lot of short trip city driving. I'm interested to see if I can get 40,000 on the pads. I did all that work myselft with performance rotors for under $350.

Here is what my wheels look like. Brake dust need not apply.

I went with the Akebono Ceramic pads on new plain rotors. No dust, WAY more stopping power. I have been very happy.
