It will say right on top of the engine what engine you have.
Up to 1996 is the 3.9, 1997-2002 is the 4.0.
The TDI's are diesel, the MPI is the 4 cylinder.
You have a V8i, V8 fuel injected.

good stuff, this is the progress thus far. did the check on the schrader valve, fuel just dribbled out one time, while cranking nothing came out. so, fuel is obviously not getting to the engine. is there any way I can pull out the fuel pump and check for debris on the pump?

Yes it is easy to check/replace the fuel pump.
Remove the trim pieces to the floor in the cargo area, roll up the carpet and there is a access panel to the fuel pump.
Open the hatch, and there is the pump.
Check for power to the fuel pump with a voltmeter. No power to the pump then bad fuel pump relay.
Power to the pump but pump not working bad fuel pump.

ok, so we did the check. power was coming to the fuel pump but the pump was not working. didnt hear that distant griding sound you hear when the key is in postion 2 just before cranking...so, bad pump. checked with Joey at Outback Offroad in Chatanooga today but he didnt have any used fuel pumps. really dont want to drop 400plus on a new one..advance had one for 520 and the stealership had one for 650ish..

im gonna try atlantic britsh..any thoughts?

thanks for all your help, really gone a long way to helping us out!

AB is going to be expensive and only have new pumps.

www.autosportsunlimited.com, I buy from these guys all the time, bought a fuel pump for my wifes Volvo from these guys.
They are local so I save on shipping.
Or check e-bay.
