I had minimal tick using 15/40
I am moving up to Amsoil 20/50 for flat tappet engines.

As to the hood heat something is wrong, are you sure your temp monitor was working ?
i have a blue driver installed and it was reading out with what I believed was correct temp data. Maybe it has to do with my fan clutch?

Do you have a device that can read actual engine temps? Gauge in cluster is worthless. Does the electric secondary fan come on at all? (Okay, just read your post above).

Question, did you monitor temps while it was idling for 5/10 minutes? These things can heat up fast while idling...especially...if it's not totally bled out.

Me, l'd run at least 10W40.

Brian.

@Stephen Perez Try monitoring both the engine RPM and Temp, some bluetooth devices will loose connection, and then you see the last data no the current data.

My hood was not that hot after a 20 min low range slow hill climb at 104 deg and my engine hitting 215. Do you still have the hood insulation in place?

i did have the insulation in place. I did some research after that incident and removed the side insulation which seemed to help a lot. I still have the front and rear insulation. Any good forums on how to rig aftermarket gauges? I‘m hoping it’s easier than this rebuild. So far, she’s been a PITA, but a wicked good learning opportunity.

UPDATE* All day today I didn’t see the low oil pressure light with conventional 5W-30. I went and bought ROTELLA 15W-40 triple protection and will be putting that in soon.

in regard to my fan clutch. I still think it’s following engine RPM. I see people have converted to a Chevy one. Worth doing that?

15w40 DIesel oil, conventional. Check your oil pressure using a mechanical gauge.
