oil pressure problem
about 6 months ago, I was driving to work, when I got off the freeway the oil pressure light was on and my rover was making horrible noises. I shut it off when I parked it at work, and was going to have it towed home. (work was only a couple blocks away) I checked the oil it was a quart low as I recall, I added it, but it was still making noise with the light on. The next morning I started it back up and everything was fine, no engine noise and the light was off. What happened? is my oil pump bad? should I replace it?. its been fine ever since and I put several thousand more miles on it without trouble.

Oil pressure got very low for a reason. Below 7 PSI to turn on the light. Right now, you don't know if you are running 13 PSI on the freeway, or 50+ like the book calls for. A mechanical oil PSI test is a good idea.
You could have:
Bad oil filter
Restricted oil cooler (if you have one, some D2 don't)
Sludged oil pickup (drop pan to inspect)
Bad oil pump (kit of parts and gaskets is about $114)
My point is that just because the light is out, it does not mean oil pressure is good enough for freeway operation. Needs to be above 10 at idle, and 50+ at 2500 rpm, engine warmed up.
