Thank you everyone for your help! I am located in Minneapolis and would love any info on mechanics you trust in the area.

I've been told more than once that I need a new engine and found that it just wasn't true.

There are a lot of folks out there that see a Land Rover owner as a walking platinum card ready to make their next boat payment for them. Especially at dealerships.

For the benefit of other newbies, NEVER take an out of warrantee LR to a dealership. They don't want to see them or mess with them and will charge you accordingly.

Follow the advice here and find and independent Rover specialist. Not a foreign car or import shop... A Land Rover specific specialist is what you want.

Then get a second and or third and fourth opinion, along with all the codes and then if you still have questions post them here for more opinions.

No need to rush out and buy a new engine, or throw in the towel without all the facts.

I have a 2004 Land Rover Discovery 2SE. Just purchased it two months ago for $6500. Put $1200 into it immediately and drove it under 1,000 miles before it over heated. Payed another $1000 for a new radiator and labor. After it was all finished the dealership told me I need a new engine. Awesome. Quote was $7000 for a used engine including labor.

Here's where I need help. What is the car worth if I sell as is? I can't possibly put MORE money into it.

Obviously it will be a huge loss. I'm coming to grips with it. I'm a young female who knows nothing about cars. The dealership thinks the guy who sold it to me put in thick oil and lied about the condition.

Any advice? Trying to make the best of this situation. Put in an engine or sell?

The car has 100,000 miles. The interior and exterior are in GREAT condition.
The initial fixes were breaks, temp control, and a few misc. things. The second $1000 radiator included an oil change with thick oil to help determine the engine problems.
Before this I always purchased new cars so I never had to deal with buying used from an individual. It's giving me so much anxiety!

The car is currently knocking loudly and this was not an issue prior to overheating.

Thanks!!!
Megan so sorry that you are going through this. I also went through a similar situation with my D2 and it was very costly but now I am a pretty happy camper. This is not my daily driver but a secondary SUV. My advice is this. Decide if you can invest another 5-9k in a new rebuilt TopHat lined Longblock motor from a independent LR shop not a stealership. This will be the only way you will get any dependabiliy out of this platform and cure any anxiety. Otherwise cut your losses, sell it as is/trade it for something dependable. These are very high maint trucks to keep and maintain hence why they are so cheap to buy, (not in your case) and this forum is filled up with horror stories on motor failures. You unfortunately got taken for a bad ride.

Never had personal experience, but Expedition Autoworks and Top Gear are the main indy rover shops in the metro area.

If you live downtown, Top Gear is right around Hwy 55 and Lake st.

Is it driveable? I live in mendota heights and will be around most of the day tomorrow trying to fix the wifes audi. Im no expert, but Ive done all the work on my rovers and can scan the codes and temps and give it at least a modest look over.

You can read about the fun Ive had with my 04 SE here...

Lastly, the girl I got mine from called a salvage yard and they offered her $2000 for it about a year ago. I dont know which one, but she said it was at the top of her google search, so probably Viking or AAA Auto salvage. Its not much, but better than nothing and less hassle than trying to craigslist it.

Thanks for all your help! I live in Uptown, but the car is located at Imola Motorsports near Ridgedale. I'm on vacation until Sunday so I've been doing a lot of this over the phone. Imola said the clunking is loud and it could drive, but they aren't sure how far. 5 miles or 100 who knows! I'm going to do some research and call around. I get free towing so I think I'll get it towed somewhere to be safe. I hate to break more!

I dont have experience with Imola either, but given all the Ferraris and Lambos you see around that shop, I assume they are pretty competent

Still, like Dave03 said, any shop that has a young woman bringing in a land rover with engine issues can see you as a walking, talking wad of $100 bills.

What exactly happened when it overheated? Did the temp gauge go to the top for a while?

I had a friend recommend imola saying they would be cheaper then the land rover dealership (I went there the first time). Plus I literally pulled over while it was over heating and imola was less then a mile away so it was convenient at the time. They were very patient and tried their best to explain things to me. I just can't possibly afford $7000.

Yes, the temp gage would jump to the top quickly. Couldn't make it more then a few blocks. It steamed like CRAZY since it was so cold out.

Well, the fact that it is now making a loud knock is probably a bad sign.

It's hard to know if it could do any good without knowing more symptoms, but you can try running a bottle of block sealer through it. People pooh-pooh it, but I did it to mine, and dont see the big deal if its a last resort. If the block is indeed toast, worst case scenario is you are out a new radiator (which did unfortunately cost you $1000 in labor to install).

If she has a new radiator, there is zero chance the sealer will hurt it. Sealer can clog up passages that are already partially clogged. It won't clog an open passage.

That said, it won't help a knock. Knocks are usually bearing problems. The chemical tool for that would be motor honey or an equivalent. I think it just thickens the oil to quiet the knock.

It sounds to me like the truck was severely overheated and probly does need a new engine.
