"How hard is putting a different engine in?"
it’s all relative to what your experience is.
If you have never done it before it can be intimidating, once you have done one or two its just another days work.
Take lots of picture so you can refure back to them, label and bag everything when you take it off makes easier.
easlily do it in a weekend with a friend and not to many beers or blunts

Hence, the only way for it to have been cleaned by coolant is a leak through the block.

you can try anything you dont have much to lose at this point. did you have that head preasure tested
caymandrew there is no water running bewteen the head and the block in that area. So if the one piston is "steam cleaned" it meens that there is a crack behind the liner, and the coolant is entering the combustion chamber which is what causes the steam cleaning effect.

drow: didnt have it pressure tested. Just got the head off this morning. Would would that tell us anything we dont already assume? HG looked fine and pretty nice actually.
Buzz: thats not comforting haha
So, re-assembling...
At this point I only have the drivers side head off and its gasket has no sign of fault.
The passenger head has no misfire codes.
Do I still need to get the heads checked for flatness?
