Cool engine knock

FNG here. I am the new owner of a 99 disco 2.w/170,000 miles. I have been reading the form for a few days and can't find a definative answer to my question, So here goes.
I hear a knocking noise but I can't put my finger on it. I have used my stethascope on the oil pan thinking crank kit. But it's not there. I listened to the top end (someone has replaced the heads) but no knock there....... It does not go away if I rev or if I idle. I am now thinking a slipped sleeve? But how can I tell? I am into it for nothing so I believe it is worth fixing if I knew what the problem is. I am not a bad mech. I build mostly classic American, but have done a few MG’s & worked on a few Jags for my friends. but this knocking has me baffled. It is subtle but it is there, sounds like meatel on metal. Any help would be appreciated.

Oh it could be lots of things. But you can have all the tech manuals for free at the link below, they are called the RAVE.

Some popular noise makers:

oil pump (you can do a manual PSI test by remving the low oil PSI sensor and attaching a gauge) [there has been a recent post of a failed pump that was cracked into four sections, and still pumped]

slipped cylinder sleeve (usually called a "tick")

Cam shaft - worn out

Crank shaft bearings

Wrist pins on connecting rods

IMHO oil pump would be 1st on the list to check, because it is easier to deal with than others. https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...highlight=pump is a recent post with photos of what to expect. You'll want to do that pressure test cold and warm, idle and 2500 rpm.

Buzz, Thanks for the Quick reply. I was hoping for one of those " yes I know that sound, instead of a full diagnostic run. I find it amusing that I can't put my finger on it. It does have a money sound if you know what I mean.
BTY what does the little green gear with the letter S in the dash board lights light mean ? Thanks again and I am sure as I begin the investigation
I will be asking more questions.

That represents sport mode for your automatic transmission. There is a mode button on the center shifter closest to your window buttons. press it and it will go into regular mode, press again and Sport mode.

There is an M light as well for manual mode, alot of times when your battery is going dead they will flash and the transmission will go into "limp mode". Lots of stuf on here about that just search the forum.

Welcome to the party...
