Default Engine Noise

Hey guys-

One more question tonight!

I also recently had new plugs and wires put in as I am working my way down the major service (I went with the 8mm Magnecor and Bosch plugs).

Immediately afterwards I had some error codes (P0154/P0155) that ended up being the result of a loose MAF sensor and some noise that I have not figured out. I am taking it back to the shop this weekend, but wanted to post a video for some advice. It is loudest from inside the car but is clearly from the engine.

See video here:

Does anyone have an idea what could be causing the repetitive low noise that is most clear at the end of the video?

If it is something major, I would almost rather not know!

Thanks

-Dustin

That almost sounds like a video a guy posted awhile back of his power steering pump growling. I remember he took a 15mm socket and breaker bar and gently applied pressure to the belt tensioner with the engine running and the noise subsided (but of course returned once the tensioner was released). Be careful (remove viscous fan) not to jump the belt. Have you tried something like that? At least you could narrow the noise done to something on the front cover.

Or you could just take the belt off all together but don't overheat your truck.

Found the video:

Kinda sounds like my alternator did before it went out. Stick a long screwdriver or something to where you think the sound is coming from and hold your ear to the other end, should help you find it better. I carry a 2+ foot long flat head screwdriver with me and it is mainly used for locating the ticks, grindings, and squeaks under the hood. Prolly gets used atleast twice a week. Good luck.

Yardstick will also work, or a broom handle, but get approval from SWMBO first, don't take one that is on flight status.

As for the 154/155, that is not a MAF issue but bank 2 sensor 1 02 has failed, so at your mileage, replace both front 02's and the engine will run much better.
Let us know what the noise turns out to be.

The problem ended up being a bad bearing on an idler pulley (the 80mm one). I went ahead and replaced both idlers and the tensioner pulley as well in addition to my water pump, which was leaking.

Thanks for the help here. I'll be doing the O2 sensors soon.

keep a check on your viscous fan clutch, it may want to re-join the old water pump. They like jumping off the cliff holding hands. They have been spinning around the dance floor for millions of revolutions.

Haha,
That video was my 2001.
I still have the noise and replaced the power steering pump a year ago in the parking lot at work in Boulder.

Maybe I will try to locate a bad pully. How did you isolate it?

Did your noise sound like this one?

My noise was very similar, maybe a bit deeper.

In my case there were a lot of signs pointing towards the pump needing to be replaced including a slight coolant leak and wobbling fan.

If you have some play in your fan, it may be the pump making the noise.
