Default RE: Engine noise... I can't figure this one.

It has been confirmed. It is a rod nock. Suprising for only 87k miles but I guess the last owner may have neglected it. I have been doing a little research and was told I can change out the bottom end bearings while the engine is right in the car. The mechanic says there is very little noise which goes away fairly quick so I might be able to replace the bearings and it be ok. Any suggestions where to go from here guys and if I get to the bearings any recommendations on how to do it. Anything else I should replace while I am down there? Thanks again.

I have seen you post, and don't know. You might send a message to Disco Mike, or geoman. I think geoman has the parts you need...

Good Luck!

Provided you can drop the oil pan easily, this shouldn't be too bad. I've only taken the oil pan off with the engine on a stand so I don't know if there is much room with the engine in the truck. Guessing that it will requre the removal of few things to do it. The oil pick-up sticks way down in the pan and you have to have a few inches directly below the pan in order to manuver the pan out. In any case, do you know which rod bearing needs to be replaced? There are a few variables which would decide whether you want to replace all the rod bearings while you are in there or just one. Order an new oil pan gasket before starting the job as well.

I have dropped the oil pan which was suprisingly easy to do while the the engine is still in the vehicle. Oil pan looked clean, no sludge, no metal nothing! Bottom of the engine looks clean and the oil pickup screen looks clean. I just bought a set of bearings and plan to replace all but came to a standstill when I got to the cap bolts for the rod bearings. I can't seem to be able to find a socket for it. I don't know which bearings are bad or even if the bearings are bad. All I have to go by is what the mechanic said. The noise still goes when the engine is warm. How do I know it was actually the bearings when I take them apart? This is getting kinda frustrating! I also hear that they do not use a gasket on a rover and I did not see an old one when I removed my pan. Where can I find that socket?

Mike I see that you have called people when they needed help. I have a few questions for you if you could please call me or I can call you. Thanks.

What ever came of this? I am a new member on this forum, therefore I can not PM people yet.

Refer to my thread:

For some reason I just doubt mine is rod-knock. I think my thrust plate is bad and the camshaft snout is rattling around. As oil pressure builds as engine temp builds, the gap is lessoned by expansion of the metal. Or maybe the thrust plate bolts have rattled loose?
