No worries. Thanks for all your insight. I dont have a timing light. Should I go buy one? I think I know the answer, but is there a way to play with the timing without a timing light?

Yes you cna adjust the timing by listening to the engine, but if you dont know exactly what its supposed to sound like then I would buy a cheap timing light.
Otherwise have a shop do it, I dont know how much a timing light costs anymore so it might be cheaper to pay $50 and have it done for you.

I have not set timing in a very long time, but this is what I remember...your timing advance in degree's should be on a sticker under the hood.
Set the #1 cylinder to TDC on the compression stroke, you will need to do this by removing the spark plug and turning the engine over by hand (with a breaker bar and a socket on the crank shaft pully nut)
Then put the spark plug back, there should be a timing gauge on the front of the block right above the crank pully, use a white paint pen or chalk and mark the crank pully at "0" degree mark.
Loosen teh distribitor.
Start the engine and using the light pointed at the crank pully the light should flash at the same time as the mark you made comes around.
Move the distribitor clock wise or anti clockwise until your timing mark is at the degree it is supposed to be, tighten the distibitor back down and you are done.
