Default Engine replacement in my immediate future

2003 Landrover Discovery II SE7
4.6 Liter V-8 with secondary air
VIN # SALTW16413A801409

Engine was ticking and shortly after started knocking and died
Looking for a replacement engine...
Should I go used or remanufactured? pros vs. cons...(costs vs. risk)
Need suggestions for reputable salvage or refurbisher.
Also need reputable mechanic to do the swap.
Located in Alabama

Not sure where you are in AL, but I live in Atlanta and there are quite a few good guys here.

Indy rover shop called "The Shop" in Norcross 678.352.4900

I've found some deals on engines on Craigslist - several good rover parts places here.

Hope that helps.

IMHO, I'd get a decent engine out of a used rover, swap it, and, as time and money allow, rebuild your dead one to have when the used guy blows apart.

For used engine, find one that hasn't been sitting long, bring cash, and hammer the seller. Also if you know anyone in the insurance side, call them up and let them know you're looking for a wrecked or totaled disco.

There is a motor shop in Oklahoma that sells a ton of Rover engines. There were a few threads a month or so ago from guys installing those engines.

You can also use a 4.0 with secondary air out of a older DII.
It will bolt right up and plug right in, those can be found pretty cheap used.
Or you can buy a brand new crate engine from the UK for about $5200 shipped to you.
You can get a brand new short block from the UK shipped to you for about $3000 then you swap over your heads, intake, etc.
There was a guy on here who did that a year or so ago, do a search for it.

You can use a 4.6 with SAI out of a p38 range rover, 1999-2002 if you swap the front cover. Also, I think there are a couple of people selling 4.6 over on discoweb right now.

I found a Bosch 4.6 SAI out of P38 with 110,000 miles for 2000.00 shipped. Is this a good deal? Are there any other issues in the swap besides the front cover and wiring harness plugs?
