Power steering pump replaced. Immediate leak.
Hi again guys, I replaced my power steering pump about two weeks ago with a remanufacutured pump from the local auto parts store. My original pump's gasket blew out on a trip out of town and I had no choice, but to use the local parts store. Anyway, about a week later I noticed a small puddle of PS fluid under the truck. It looks like it's coming down from the new pump. I can't tell if it's the suction hose or the pump itself since it seems to be running down that lower hose. I degreased everything, but can't seen to find the source. My fear is that it's the new pump. Is it possible that I over torqued something by hand causing the pump gasket to fail. I wasn't working with a torque wrench available. Are the reman pumps apt to fail? I'm not noticing any fluid loss in the reservoir yet, so it's a slow leak. Pretty frustrating, but any advice or knowledge on this would really be appreciated. Thanks for any help.
Ive heard countless people say how unreliable rebuilt power steering pumps are. I recently replaced my worn out pump, reservoir and 2 PS hoses and my leak is gone. I noticed that Rovers North sells rebuilt pumps for $349 but for an extra $30 you can buy one of their brand new Proline pumps and rest assured. When you replaced your pump you probably should have at least replaced the 2 rubber hoses that connect to the reservoir. Another common area for leaks is the 3rd hose that is half metal and part rubber. It weaves behind the radiator I believe and is harder to access without lifting up the radiator.
Thanks guys, I loosened the return line clamp and adjusted/ tightened it. I didn't see any fluid on the floor today. I'll have to look underneath later. I really hope that was it. I'll probably order a new hose just in case. Thanks again.
