Default Fan Clutch Install; special tools?

I have been hearing mixed things about the requirement of special tools to remove the viscous fan clutch in a D1.

Some are convinced that the Atl Brit fan wrench is required, while others tell me any adjustable wrench will do.

mechanic wants $430 to replace the fan and viscous, so i'd rather just buy the $50 Imperial one and a cheap fan off somebody if i don't have to buy $100 worth of tools.

Can the truth on tool requirements finally be established?

Not to hi-jack your thread, but while we're on the subject....

My fan runs constantly on my '96 DI and is very loud while accelerating even when the engine is cold. It almost feels like its taking some of the power away. Is this normal or is it only supposed to run when needed such as when the engine hits a certain temperature? Does it run all the time if the clutch is worn out?

Poster #1- the tool makes it a lot easier. Worth the bucks, but you can get it without it.

Poster #2 - you need a new fan clutch.

I have seen some adjustable wrenches that are very flat and can be used to uninstall the fan clutch. Also, if you have a useless steel plate and a saw, you can make your own tool.
As you want to do it your self without spending money, this two options may be useful for you.

I used a big crescent wrench.
