Well, it is done! The 3 amigos are no more. Did the "Option B" about 10 yrs ago, and that's about how long a shuttle valve switch and the spliced red/white wire that was part of "Option B".
I recently had the lights of doom off and on, randomly, they'd go away for a day or two, then surprise, right back they'd come. No rhyme or reason. Nothing seemed to trigger them. I checked grounds and wires, continuity, no problems. I've had my '00 since Aug. of '08, daily driver, some off road, snow, etc., so it has been used a lot. I'm the 4th owner, the PO was a factory trained LR mechanic from Manchester, England, who co-owned a top notch independent import repair shop. The ABS unit had been replaced, as it is labeled an "02" unit. Everything was fixed and fine.
The 3 amigos were driving me crazy, then I finally found Falconworks in Tucson, AZ. https://www.falconworks.net
They have a kit that not only provides a new from Wabco Shuttle Valve Switch, but they also provide new seals for the valves that the switch system works. You do have to remove the ABS modular, which means taking all the brake lines off, then bleeding everything, but their directions for the valve seals removal and installation is first rate. Link to the kit:
One point they make is that if there is moisture on the switch when you remove it, the seals are shot. See picture to see that not only were the seals leaking, but the wiring was fried. See the picture of my old switch after removal. Note the leaked brake fluid and the wiring. Installed the kit, bled the brakes and the Modulator (used my Nanocom Evo), and no more 3 amigos!! I'll keep you posted as to if they stay "gone". Now for a beer!!!
Also installed on my first and second Disco. One of the best things you can do for your truck…
I did recently have a recurrence, accompanied by the brake light illuminated. Member Extinct, who I bought the truck from, said the brake light was a hard fault likely caused by a faulty wheel speed sensor. This was the case (driver’s side rear wheel hub). Replaced and back to normal!
A good day indeed! The 3 amigos are the most depressing thing to go wrong in these trucks, it kills any sort of traction a control while simultaneously making your ABS way weaker, assuming it works at all.
