Default Flashing Lights and Third Only

On the way back from a shooting/Trail Running foray, (30 miles? driveway to driveway) my "M" and "S" lights started flashing, the "D" indicator in the speedo cluster is flashing, and the red LED on the PRNDL indicator in the console is also flashing.

Vehicle, regardless of Sport mode, or physical location of shifter, only has 3rd gear.

I can't have gone from a fully functional 4 speed to a lunched tranny, that easy, could have I?

2004 DiscoII HSE7, Catless, and eFanned.

Other than that stock stock (well, it's missing abunch of plasticky sh** on the outside, and I am running a 32" tire) DII with 124k on the Odometer.

Switch the key on and off a few times and then start it to see what you get. Clean and tighten your battery connections. You gotta start somewhere and a low or bad battery or loose connection can do that.

Thinking that is the route of the problem, let it sit, and it's fine. My negative is problematic.

Yea when I first got my truck I had all kinds of crap going off and I cleaned all of my ground connections and put a new HD end on my ground cable and that fixed it.

If you do put a new cable end on be careful when removing the old one that you don't loose any length, cause they put just enough cable to barely make it. cut an inch off and it won't reach.

It'll get an accelerated trip down Manuel Tranny lane at that point.

There in lies the rub, I swapped ends, which shortened it, and there is my issue, gonna re-do it before the weekend.

Fortunately, I walk to work, at 75 yds, seems futile to drive, and employee parking is enough of a nightmare, 6-12 of us are on my street, (inclusive of in front of my house), so it can sit until Sunday.

Run a short ground cable from the terminal on the fender to the battery and leave the other one running from the fender terminal to the engine.

If the battery and grounds don't sort it run the codes on an OBD11 and check 'em out. It may be the XYZ selector switch on the side of the autobox. Don't panic, they are repairable but check the price of a new one anyways.

In the UK they ask around £425 which is ridiculous for a rotary switch that's probably made in China and marked up 1000%.

Search thro the web for the disco 2 xyz switch repair which I think was an Aulro write up. It's v. good with pictures and all the data although mine was a later switch the principle is the same.

When i was doing the eFan conversion/H2o pump swap, the wife thought it would be cute for the 4.5 and 2.8 yr old to help.

Repossessed pulleys out of the yard.... tools from the toy box.... The only part I wasn't able to reclaim was the male part of the terminal on the negative side that the tightening nut threads down on.

Replaced the terminal end with what looked like a better mousetrap.

Apparently that was the root of my issues, as I now am running a 1 gauge terminal to factory ground distribution block strap, and there car is as if new again.

Thankfully it was simple.....
