If an oil change quieted it down, it could be lifters.

We had a tick, I disassembled the engine in 2013 to do the head gaskets and found some of the holes clogged. Cleaned the holes and tick is no longer there.
Are the rockets a doable job? Thanks for your input

what I don’t understand is this engine by previous owner is supposedly “rebuilt.” a lot of things have gone flooey since my ownership so not sure how much of that rebuild I believe. Wouldn’t he have done lifters? Engines not even 20k.

ive mentioned this in other threads and previous owner has confessed I have a slipped liner on drivers side. But it wouldn’t make all that racket at cold start. Done combustion tests over and over again- no sign of coolant leak. sorry to be throwing more curve *****, I’m not too worried about it since the truck runs fantastic overall. Just more of a challenge to get down to the bottom of this noise.

One more thing, since the exhaust leak came up, I do smell fumes during initial start up. doesn’t matter the time of day cold/ warm whatever. so that could also narrow down exhaust diagnosis as well.

Sixpack, you said you replaced oil pump gears. Would that cause this noise and is it external of the block itself like its own unit or is it integrated in with the block say to be rebuilt? cuz that may have been something previous owner didn’t touch and currently still has 180 miles on it. Just like my damn power steering pump I’m replacing for the third time.

Thanks again 🤙🏼

The oil pump is inside the timing cover.
There are screws holding a cover plate over 2 planetary gears.
The gears wear against the timing cover, with soft aluminum cover vs steel gears. Apparently that causes low oil pressure, and is why the timing cover should be replaced.
The oil pump gears crack, usually in 2-3 pieces.
It can be hard to see at a glance, then you lift out 3 pieces of each.
That can make a ticking sound, as well affect oil pressure.
New covers come with oil pumps, oil pumps themselves are cheap.
I put a new oil pump in my 4.6, ran only around 20 minutes, tick was still there, pulled engine out for rebuild.
I bought a new cover, that came with a new oil pump.
So if you need an almost new oil pump, pay shipping and it's yours.
