Default Are the front bumpers made out of paper?

It seems like all the discos im checking out for sale have some sort of bumper issue, either they are cracked or have missing pieces. Is this part hard to replace?
Thanks

A lot of serious off road owners trim them back quite a bit, or add a larger unit with winch, etc. If you think the bumpers are toast, wait 'til you get to th head gaskets, cooling system, alarm system, oil leaks, etc.

They are not hard to replace, just expensive.
They are plenty sturdy, but like any OEM bumper not made for tons of abuse.

Default You can go the Herculiner route

Mine had a pretty serious crack. I fixed with Bondo and duct tape, and painted the bumpers and wheel well arches with Herculiner. Looks great, and is more rugged. Then again, I haven't backed into a tree lately...

On the newer disco's (03-04), the plastic bumpers for some reason don't like a lot of cleaners - it degrades the plastic and renders it very brittle.

My 2000, and 2002 didn't have nearly as much of an issue.

Depending on where you are, used ones are cheap and plentiful. Craigslist.org here in atlanta is covered up with people parting out rovers.

Or, just drop the cash on a nice aftermarket and be done with it.

the rich ****s that bought them new usually dont have a bit of common sense, and figure that since it has traction and can drive in pretty deep snow, that they could worry free plow through berms and ice chunks from plows at highway speed and figure the plasic bumper is as strong as the axles. figure also these have high clearance, EXCEPT at the front bumper, they cna bend out of the way for alot of stuff, but driving over curbs or through ruts eat the plastic up which only becomes more brittle with time. ive seen people plow through a half foot of water at 40mph... the 5000+lbs truck will go through, but that impact for on a 1/4 piece of plastic trim thats formed shaped recieves the same impact as a firehose.

really hard to justify this one. really the stock bumpers are ridiculous. any type of city or mall like situations and your bumpers gonna get hit and crack. if you don't have a crack you will. if you get a crack itll get bigger. get a guard or better yet an off road steel bumper. you're lucky if you can repair it and i'm feeling like i can repair pretty any plastic bits rt now.
