Default Front drive shaft woes

So I probably know the answer but here we go.
My front driveshaft on my newly acquired 2001 disco appears to be aftermarket. I can see zerk fittings in the u joints to grease em up. And its a dull olive green color.

My question is being of unknown maintenance are they just as prone to blowing a hole in my tranny. Or was that a defect combined with no ability to grease on the oem shafts?

Grease it up and go would be nice, but seems unlikely
.
Assuming I should just order up another or rebuild it for peace of mind.
Im leaning toward a rebuild if so, anyone have good/affordable rebuild parts list? or are the precision parts in the sticky the go to for it?
Thanks

For the piece of mind don't over think this, just call Lucky8 and take your pick. You'll be glad you did.

$188.00 shipped =

Very tempting. Quite a good price. Somehow i only saw the more expensive one before. I think i have the parts i need in a cart on amazon for about 85 bucks. Moog/ precision
About 100 bucks cheaper. But add the cost of beer n pizza getting near the same.
Guess I'm sleeping on being a lazy SOB and ordering the lucky 8 shaft. Or just rebuilding it Monday myself.

Aren't the green ones British Parts of Utah? I recall those being very good. I would be tempted to grease it up and go. And yes the OG shafts failed due to no ability to grease.

If you are in doubt, I would take it off and inspect the U joints. Play, resistance when moving, aso. It also makes greasing much easier as well as removing the surplus grease after that.

My driveshaft failed at 104,000 miles, damaging the transfer case (luckily no catastrophic failure). Needed a new transfer case and cost for a HD drive shaft from BP Utah was almost negligible after other parts and labor. The drive shaft is good quality, no vibrations at all and it greases very well (at every other oil change).

Yeah I've decided to pull it off tonight. Inspect and probably rebuild after making sure what u joints it contains. Gonna lock the cdl and drive ever so gently. Should only be aday or two

Make sure you also address the ball joint in the double cardon section of the shaft. That's something that is commonly overlooked.

Will do. Is that the centering ball? Plan is to replace anything that is possible. Thanks for the advise

If your looking to purchase a new one I would already go with a Tom Woods, Gwynn Lewis or other beefed up one. I would stay away from Lucky 8s unless you plan on doing light wheeling or not very often. I've twisted 2 of those already. Not saying they are bad but if you plan on going lockers in my opinion they just don't hold up.

Pulled the front shaft and it seemed to be pretty darn new or well maintained or both. Was Smooth, no play no crunchy squeaky nothing.
Greased at 5 zerks and it pushed out fairly new looking grease from all points. Reinstalled and I'm happy for the time being. Until lift necessitates a different shaft at least.
