Default Front Driveshaft

is it a simple repair that mechanic can do or do i have to go to a shop that specializes in this? i don't want to come to a point where the problem is already there before i fix it (or get it fixed in my case) so i want to do some preventive maintenance. is there any additional requirement or any other part to be mandatory replaced after the driveshaft is rebuilt? i think i'm the fourth owner of my disco 96. i doubt that the previous owners have done this. come to think of it, i don't even know the maintenance history. i know, i know, i should have found out those things before i bought my truck. but what's done is done. besides, i'm very happy with it. it was love at first drive. what more can i say?

It's the front shaft ona Disco 2 that has the problems. If yours is a 96 then its a Disco 1 and all you need to do is give your UJ's on both drivshafts a regular greasing. Obviously "if" the UJ's are worn, then you can renew them and thats a pretty simple task to be honest.

So how often are you lubing your u-joints on the 96??
Should be once or twice a year depending on your mileage and use.

No, the Disco 2 has a double cardan or "hookes joint" or Double UJ (however you know it as) at the rear of the front shaft at the transfer box end. Its there because of the difference in alignment of the Transfer box / gearbox / axles. The Disco 1 did not have /need one.

Lube your u-joints at every oil changeand after every deep water crossing. Along with checking foir water ingress into the diffs and t-case.
